Fork Lift Truck Safety

Fork Lift Truck Safety

Fork lift trucks are used widely in the construction, distribution and warehouse industries. Forktrucks are very heavy and very dangerous pieces of equipment if they are not used in the correct manner. Many accidents occur onsite due to fork lift trucks and some can be very serious. It is important when operating a fork lift truck to follow all the safety guidelines and rules to minimalise the risk of accidents and injury to the operator and to others nearby.

Forklift Training Is Required

Before you can begin operating a forklift truck the correct training must be given by a qualified instructor. This training will show the operator how to drive and operate the forklift truck in the correct and safe way. Certain procedures need to be followed to ensure all safety measures are in place for example checking the surrounding area where the forklift will be used for dangers and hazardous conditions.

Forklift Checks and Inspections

It is required to make checks of the fork lift truck before it is used and operated. These checks need to be carried out every day, and then a more thorough inspection is to be conducted on a weekly basis. These checks are put in place to prevent the risk of accidents. The inspection will show the operator any damages to the vehicle or if a part needs replacing or repairing. The forklift truck should not be used until the forklift parts are repaired and the truck is in fully working condition.

Safety checks should be carried out by all staff and workers not only the forklift operator and not only around the forklift truck. Checking the area of a construction site or warehouse for dangerous situations can minimalise the risk of accidents which can reduce the amount of damaged equipment and can save injury.
