Uses And Benefits Of A Forklift

Workplace injuries are always a concern with corporations. If not kept under control, it cost them a lot of money in health care expense as well as staffing expense. When an employee goes down with a work related injury, it can take weeks and months, sometimes even longer, to heal and rehabilitate that injury. Then, they have to replace that injured worker with another qualified and competent worker. This is the primary reason why the use of a forklift was created.

Long before the development of forklifts, all the heavy lifting was very much a manual process. It was accomplished through the use of ropes and pulleys. The inventory, crates, boxes, skids and other items were secured with these ropes and cables, then hoisted above or moved along via the use of a pulley system.

With the invention of the forklift this very manual, dangerous and exhausting work was automated. The pulleys, ropes and cables were replaced with a mobile machine with fork like appendages. Forklifts can be easily maneuvered and driven even in tight places. The steering is fluid and effortless.

The forks on these machines are designed for strength, balance and flexibility. They are simply inserted into open cavities within the item to be lifted, moved, stored or packed. Once the forks are in place, then the driver can lift the apparatus to heights sometimes twice the distance of the forklift itself. The cab where the driver sits is typically only big enough for one person. The cab can also be directed and moved independently of the base unit.

Once industries and companies began introducing these machines in the workplace, they experienced a significant drop in work related injuries. Forklifts require a basic operations training to learn the mechanisms and functions of it. They are used in a variety of work settings both indoor as well as outside.
