Some companies allow their workers to drive a fork lift even though they do not have sufficient training. Such an action could give adverse effects to the company and its workers.
An inexperienced driver might cause a serious accident. He or she might accidentally bang into a worker who passes by the vehicle due to quick and inaccurate maneuvers. Some drivers tend to think that driving this vehicle is similar to driving any other vehicle. However, it is not.
There have been a number of reported cases of fork lift accidents, which occurred in companies. Driving this type of vehicle is different due to certain reasons. Some models are not equipped with reverse sensors. Even if they are, the sensors do not cover a wide rear end area.
Therefore, it is important to drive the vehicle slowly and reverse it after ensuring that there is no worker behind it. An inexperienced driver or someone who lacks the proper skills might use the vehicle to pick up items, which are too heavy for the vehicle or in an improper way. This might cause the items to fall off the vehicle suddenly and cause damage to the goods or even workers who happened to be nearby.
Irrespective of whether a company is certified with OSHAS18001 or not, workplace safety is an important issue. If a worker was injured during a forklift accident, he or she can make personal injury claims. This might involve some form of investigation, which could lead to legal issues due to lack of proper implementation of safety issues. Proper training of forklift drivers happens to be of one of them.
In short, a company should ensure that its workers have the necessary training and skills before allowing them to drive a fork lift in its premises. By doing so, the company can prevent serious accidents, which involve workers or goods.
