Tips Driving A Fork Lift
Tips Driving A Fork Lift
All
fork lift operators are required to receive the proper training from a qualified instructor set up by their employer. Within this training all the rules and regulation of operating the fork lift is provided but over time these learnt rules get forgotten about and habits take over. Here is a look at some tips to remind fork lift operators on the correct and safe procedures of driving a fork lift.
The operator should always wear the correct clothing and footwear when driving the fork lift because it can be dangerous not to. For example if the operator is wearing flip flops they can slip off the controls which can cause an accident and their feet or toes are not covered or protected. One of the main aspects of operating a
fork lift truck is the daily checks that need to be carried out. It is quite common for the person to skip over these daily checks thinking everything will be fine because the truck was only used yesterday but it is essential that these checks are carried out every day. Taking half an hour to conduct these checks would minimalise the risk of fork lift related accidents dramatically.
Another common factor when a person has driven a fork lift for a long period of time is to ignore the speed rules. This is the same for a lot of drivers on the road, once they have built up their confidence with the machine they go faster and faster. The problem with this is that it takes longer for the fork lift to stop once the brakes are pushed down. These extra seconds can make a big difference to the prevention of an accident. This leads on to another section of driving with due care and attention. With experience you tend to forget you’re A,B,C’s and just drive but with this you can forget to check important aspects such as checking your mirrors, looking in your blind spots, getting easily distracted or driving whilst doing something else. Taking your attention off the driving of the
fork lift can be very dangerous and potentially fatal.
