A fork lift is a machine that is used to move heavy, large objects. There are a variety of different types and sizes of these machines on the market and all have different uses. Often, you will find equipment such as this on construction sites, in manufacturing facilities or even business warehouses.
While there are many different types on the market two of the most common fork lifts tend to be electrical or rough terrain. The rough terrain version is commonly used on new construction sites where heavy lifting will be a necessity, while the electrical version of this fascinating machine is often used for smaller tasks in areas such as warehouses.
Not every company employing drivers will require certification to operate the machinery however, it is highly recommended to ensure that regardless of what type of equipment you are planning to use you have obtained all of the necessary training to ensure your safety and those around you while the machine is in operation. The length of time needed to complete proper certification can range anywhere from a full day's training to a couple of days depending on the variety of factors including where you are receiving your training.
Generally speaking, most fork lift courses have their prospective drivers look at a variety of videos explaining the various aspects of the machinery, instruction manuals as well as complete exams. Many courses consist of classroom teaching as well as hands-on learning.
Once you have completed the fork lift course as set out by your employer or course coordinator you will then be required to show that you have successfully understood the skills before certification can be finalized. Often you will be required to show your skills to one or more instructors during the final aspect of your course. In most cases, certifications are valid for approximately three years before needing to update your certification.
