Checking your Fork Truck for Safety

A fork truck is an industrial machine that is heavy in nature and which is used to carry heavy loads. It is steered from the rear wheel and has a different center of balance from other machines like cars. It is therefore important for everyone to understand how to be safe when near this machine.

You must inspect your trucks before driving them. Such things as fluid leaks must be checked. Other things that should be checked include the tires, forks, lifts and the overhead guard. The forklifts should be mounted using the safety handle.

The alarms must be checked to ensure that they are functional. To achieve this, you should adjust your gauges and the monitors. The lights are important and so are the horns. You also should adjust your seats and fasten your safety belts.

When driving the fork truck, choose the low rate speed. Always be cautious when taking a turn to avoid tipping of the machine. When carrying the type of load that blocks your vision, it is advisable to drive in reverse gear. Be keen to check for any pedestrians and obstacles on your route.

To avoid injury, always sit in the cage enclosure. Putting any parts of your body outside the cage exposes you to a risk of serious injury. When moving, always keep the forks about two to six inches from the ground. You must not raise or lower lifts while you are driving.

When driving the fork truck, stop and look for intersections and approaching traffic. If there is need, sound the horn before proceeding. The horn should also be sounded periodically when driving the lifts down isles so that any approaching person know you are there. Another important thing to do is to make sure that nobody walks under lifts when the engines are running or when at work.
